The Atacama Desert — long contained in Chile's far north — is actively expanding southward into central Chile. A brutal 15-year megadrought is stripping the soil of its moisture, and the desert boundary is creeping forward into land that once fed the country.
The Atacama is no longer staying in the top half of the country. Its boundary advances into previously fertile agricultural zones year after year, turning living land into desert floor.
Decades of intensive farming, overgrazing, and severe water erosion have depleted the soil's organic nutrients, leaving large areas of farmland practically lifeless and unable to hold water.
In the Coquimbo and Valparaíso regions — the front line of the transition — communities are now so short of water they harvest it from the air with fog-catching nets, just to drink.

Between the Atacama and the Andes lies one of the most productive valleys on Earth. Chile is the largest fruit exporter in the Southern Hemisphere — and the crops below are the livelihoods standing in the desert's path.

The crisis is not only underfoot. The Atacama's salt lagoons and desert oases — fed by the same vanishing water — shelter birds found almost nowhere else on Earth. Scientists read the flamingos like a gauge: when the flamingos leave, the wetland is dying.
Vulnerable. The rarest of the three salt-flat flamingos. At the Salar de Atacama its numbers dropped about 12% in just 11 years as the lagoons shrink.
Near Threatened. Breeds almost nowhere else on Earth but these high salt flats — down about 10% in 11 years at the Salar de Atacama.
Near Threatened. Ranges from the northern salars to Patagonia, squeezed by water taken for irrigation and mining, and by habitat loss.
Critically Endangered. A hummingbird of the Atacama's desert-valley oases — roughly 1,500 birds in 2003, fewer than 500 today, as its valley habitat disappears.
Vulnerable. Lives only in the tamarugo groves of the Pampa del Tamarugal — trees that survive on groundwater which falls a little further every year.
